How to Get Your Insurance License in Michigan: A Plain-English Walkthrough

Aegir Learning and Development · Updated September 2026 · 7 min read

If you're considering an insurance career in Michigan — life, health, or both — the licensing process is more approachable than most people expect. Here's the honest, step-by-step version.

Step 1: Meet the basics

You must be at least 18, live in Michigan (or apply as a non-resident through your home state), and be able to pass a background check.

Step 2: Complete pre-licensing education

Michigan requires a pre-licensing course for each line of authority (life, health, or both). Courses are self-paced and typically take a matter of days, not months.

Step 3: Schedule and pass the state exam

Michigan's insurance exams are administered by PSI. You can schedule online at PSI's Michigan page or by phone at 855-579-4639. The exam covers state regulations and the fundamentals of the line you're testing for.

Step 4: Apply for your license

After passing, you apply through NIPR, and the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) processes your application, including a routine background check. Questions? DIFS can be reached at (517) 284-8800 or difs-licensing@michigan.gov.

Step 5: The part nobody tells you — what happens after the license

A license is permission to begin, not a business plan. This is where team choice matters most: a mentor, a structured training calendar, and people who answer their phones. At Aegir Learning and Development, licensing support, exam prep guidance, and ongoing mentorship are part of how we work — part-time or full-time, built around your life.

Before you spend a dollar: talk to someone who has done it before you buy any course. A good team will walk you through the process honestly — including what it costs and what it doesn't.

Talk to a human before you decide

Sit down for 45–60 minutes with someone who has done it. We'll walk you through the process honestly, answer every question, and help you decide whether this path fits your life — before you invest anything.
